01 / Market Intelligence
The Illinois Energy Crisis: Why This Market Was Ready

Central and southern Illinois is served by Ameren Illinois, a utility company that has become the epicenter of America's electricity affordability crisis. Ameren serves 1.2 million electric customers, and every one of them has watched their bills climb relentlessly.

Rates have increased 94% since 2021. In summer 2025, supply prices spiked 50% overnight after the regional grid operator's capacity auction cleared at $666.50 per megawatt-day, a 22x increase from the prior year's $30. The average Ameren household saw a $626 annual increase. Some customers reported monthly bills exceeding $900.

Yet only 3.21% of Illinois homes have solar. That's 96.79% of homeowners still exposed to a utility that has filed for another rate increase in 2026, with grid capacity shortfalls projected by 2031. The gap between pain and adoption was massive, and the homeowners in this market weren't just interested in solar, they were desperate for relief.

$626
Average annual bill increase for Ameren customers. Enough to push homeowners toward alternatives.

02 / The Challenge
Broken Trust, Bad Leads, and a Market Full of Empty Promises

This client came to us after working with other lead generation agencies. The experience was typical of what solar installers face across the industry: false promises, cheap leads that never converted, and money wasted on campaigns that produced volume without value.

Some agencies delivered leads with wrong phone numbers, fake emails, and people who had no interest in solar. Others couldn't generate leads at all. By the time this installer reached us, the trust in digital marketing was broken. Revenue was coming from physical referrals and word-of-mouth, but impossible to scale.

The industry standard for solar customer acquisition is $5,880 per customer (Wood Mackenzie, 2026). My system acquires customers at $956, an 84% reduction in acquisition cost. The difference isn't luck. It's verified lead forms, AI-powered instant follow-up, and a funnel architecture that prioritizes lead quality over lead volume.

03 / The Strategy
Two Channels, One System: Machine Gun Meets Sniper

I built a dual-channel acquisition system designed to solve the quality problem while maintaining scalable volume. Each channel serves a different purpose, and together they feed a single CRM pipeline that tracks every lead from first touch to closed deal.

The Machine Gun
Meta Lead Forms / Volume with Verification
Originally a high-volume, low-cost channel that produced cheap leads with terrible contact rates. I rebuilt it with verification layers that transformed quantity into quality.
  • Phone number verification on every submission. Impossible to submit without confirming a real number
  • AI-powered bot texts leads within seconds of submission to qualify and pre-book appointments
  • Higher CPL than industry standard, but dramatically higher lead-to-contact ratio from day one
  • Feeds the pipeline with consistent volume of verified, contactable leads
Budget Allocation
Dynamic, based on real-time conversion data
🎯
The Sniper
Landing Pages / High Intent, High Conversion
A landing page-first approach where every lead takes deliberate steps before entering the pipeline. These leads have already read the offer, seen testimonials, and chosen to engage.
  • Ad click routes to a dedicated landing page with localized messaging, testimonials, and social proof
  • Headline positioning: "$0 Down Power Plan". Removes the cost barrier immediately
  • Leads book appointments directly on the page, arriving pre-sold on the value
  • Optional energy bill upload identifies the highest-quality prospects for the sales team
Performance
Consistently the highest-converting channel

Budget allocation between channels isn't fixed. It shifts week to week based on real-time performance data. Some months the landing page dominates conversions and receives the majority of spend. Other months, the lead forms outperform and budget flows there instead. The system follows the data, not a predetermined ratio.

The insight that shaped the entire campaign: not every solar market is the same. What converts in Ohio won't work in Illinois. What works in Illinois won't work in California. I targeted Ameren bill payers specifically, not generic Illinois homeowners, because the utility-specific pain point created the urgency that drives action.

04 / Client Onboarding
The Phased Approach: Break Even First, Then Scale

I don't ask clients to gamble on advertising. Every engagement follows a two-phase model designed to prove the system works before scaling spend.

Phase 1
Break Even
Month one is about generating enough closed deals to cover total campaign costs: ad spend plus management fees. The client started at $1,500/month. I produced closed deals in the first month, proving the funnel converts before asking for more budget.
Phase 2
Scale
From month two onward, the campaign compounds. The algorithm learns. Cost per lead drops. Appointment rates climb. More leads accumulate in the funnel, creating a pipeline that produces sales even from leads generated weeks earlier. The longer the campaign runs, the stronger it performs.
05 / Infrastructure
Built from Scratch: The Full System

This wasn't "run some Facebook ads." I built the entire lead generation infrastructure, from the first ad impression to the closed deal, ensuring no lead is lost at any stage of the funnel.

CRM Build-Out (GoHighLevel)Complete pipeline configuration with custom stages, ensuring every lead is tracked and no opportunity falls through the cracks.
Automation WorkflowsLead nurturing sequences, cold lead re-engagement, appointment booking reminders, and warming campaigns for leads that go dormant.
Multi-Channel FunnelsGHL funnels, Perspective funnels, and calculator websites all tested. GHL outperforming for this market. Multiple entry points feeding one pipeline.
14-Day Retargeting SequenceAutomated re-engagement for leads who showed interest but didn't convert initially. 2,792 leads enrolled in the sequence over the campaign period.
AI-Powered Lead QualificationAutomated bot that contacts leads within seconds of submission. Qualifying interest, collecting additional details, and booking appointments before the lead goes cold.
Meta Campaign ArchitectureFull campaign build with structured split testing on creatives, audiences, copy, and placements. Seasonal adjustments for summer competition and winter opportunity windows.
Landing Page StrategyLocalized messaging targeting Ameren bill payers, with social proof, testimonials, and "$0 Down" positioning. Directed the build, reviewed for errors, and connected tracking.
Campaign DiversificationExpanded beyond standard PPA campaigns to include TPO (Third-Party Ownership), battery storage, and solar calculator campaigns based on market conditions and policy shifts.
06 / Continuous Optimization
The Engine Behind the Numbers

A campaign that runs for 11 months doesn't succeed on autopilot. It succeeds on relentless, structured optimization. Every week, every variable is reviewed, tested, and refined.

Creative Analysis
Monitoring creative performance and replacing fatigued assets before they drag down CPL. Testing AI-generated video, static images, and evolving toward professional agency-shot content.
Landing Page Testing
Continuous split testing on headlines, offers, social proof elements, and page structure. Every change measured against conversion rate and appointment booking rate.
Bot & Appointment Review
Reviewing AI bot response rates, message sequences, and appointment booking performance. Optimizing the speed-to-contact window to maximize show rates.
Performance Metrics
Deep analysis of cost per lead, cost per appointment, and cost per sale across every campaign. Identifying which audience segments and regions produce the highest-value leads.
Sales Attribution
Tracking which creatives, funnels, and entry points produce closed deals, not just leads. Shifting budget toward what generates revenue, not just volume.
Seasonal Pivots
Adjusting messaging and positioning for summer competition spikes and winter opportunity windows. Introducing new campaign types (battery, calculator) based on market timing and state incentive changes.

Solar advertising follows counter-intuitive seasonal patterns. Summer brings higher competition and rising CPLs as every installer ramps up spending. Some of my strongest performing months came in winter, when competition drops but homeowners still open high Ameren bills every month. The operators who pause campaigns in "off-season" leave money on the table. I don't pause. I adjust messaging, reallocate budget between channels, and let the algorithm compound through every season.
